RIM ANNOUNCES TOUCHSCREEN BLACKBERRY STORM

The BlackBerry Storm offers 3G connectivity. A/CMDA connectivity along with quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM and 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA for global use. The Storm features a 3.25-inch, 480 by 360 touchscreen display, an integrated 3.2 megapixel camera, 1 GB of onboard memory (along with expandable microSD storage), Bluetooth, and an integrated GPS unit. The Storm also features an accelerometer so the unit can automatically switch between portrait and landscape more, and offers RIM's SureType keyboard in portrait mode and a full "virtual" QWERTY keyboard layout for messaging needs in landscape mode.

The Storm is also taking solid aim at the consumer space, offering a media player that handles full-screen movies, a music player (including popular EQ presets), support for streaming audio and video, support for popular social networking services, and an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts backlighting. For the business users, the Storm offers BlackBerry Internet service (complete with a full HTML browser), personal and corporate email support, and the ability to view and edit Microsoft Office documents right on the handset.

APPLE UPDATES iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH SOFTWARE

Apple announced updated software for the iPhone today as well. The new software update allows iPhone users to find their location on the Maps application using nearby hotspots or cellular towers. Other updates allow you to text message several people at the same time, customize the home screen and updates the iPhone for watching movies rented via iTunes.

Another interesting feature is the ability to create web clips on the iPhone, which are basically like bookmarks on the home page of the iPhone which take you to your favorite websites when pressed. The 1.1.3 update is delivered via iTunes and is available now free of charge.

Apple also announced a software update for the iPod touch. Unlike the update for the iPhone, the iPod touch software update carries a price of US$19.99. Newly purchased iPod touch devices will ship with the latest software installed.

The software update adds five new applications to the iPod touch including Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather and Notes. This update basically makes the touch an iPhone without calling capabilities. The update also allows touch owners to rent movies via iTunes.

CREATIVE PUSHES ZEN PLAYER TO 32GB

Creative is now officially offering a 32 GB version of its flash-based Zen media player. The credit-card sized players feature a 2.5-inch LCD display, battery life offering up to 30 hours of music playback (or five hours of video), and an organizer feature that can sync with Microsoft Outlook calendars, contacts, and tasks.

The Zen supports MP3, WMA, unprotected AAC, WAV, and Audible 2/3/4 audio formats, along with Motion JPEG, WMV9 and (with transcoding) MPEG 1/2/4, DivX 4/5, and XviD video. The unit will also happily display JPEGs, GIFs, TIFFs, PNGs, and BMP files, so you can wow your friends with snapshots and other images.

A 32 GB capacity puts the Zen at the top tier of flash-based players: while flash media players are well known for their practicality and battery life, they often lack the capacity to carry around meaningful amounts of video. The 32 GB Zen can handle up to 120 hours o WMV9 video encoded to 500 Kbps, or as many as 8,000 songs.

TOSHIBA INTROS NEW 1.8 INCH HARD DRIVES

Toshiba has rolled out a series of four new 1.8-inch drives, two 60 GB drives aimed at CE devices, as well as a single-platter 80 GB drive and a double-platter 120 GB drive aimed at portable PCs and handheld devices.

The new drives represent Toshiba's eighth generation of 1.8-inch hard disk drives, and Toshiba has shipped over 60 million devices in the segment, making it the leading 1.8-inch drive manufacturer.

The 120 GB MK1214GAH sports an average seek time of 12 ms, a 4,200 rpm speed, a 2 MB buffer, an a PATA interface. The single-platter, 80 GB MK8025GAL offers an 8 MB buffer and weighs two grams less than traditional 1.8-inch drives. Both drives are aimed at the mobile computing market, and feature quiet operation, low power requirements, and rugged designs.

For CE devices, the 60 GB MK6014 GAL and MK6015GAA offer a 5mm-high form factor, with the 6014GAL offering a 4,200 rpm spin rate and a 2 MB buffer, while the 6015GAA spins at a quieter 3,600 rpm and sports a 160 KB buffer.

Manufacturers should be seeing these drives in December, which means they'll be turning up in mobile devices and media players in early 2008.

SAMSUNG SHIPS 1 TB DESKTOP HARD DRIVE

Samsung has announced it is shipping its SpinPoint F1 Series 1 tereabyte desktop hard disk drive, a 3.5 inches, three-platter design that offering 7,200 rpm spindle speed, low power consumption compared to drives in its class, and quite operaton.

The F1 offers a 2Gb/s SATA interface, optimized electronics, and improved heat dissipation. Samsung claims makes the F1 the coolest operating one terabyte drive available. The device uses 6.7 watts in idle mode and an average of 7.2 watts in random seek mode.

The F1 also uses Samsung's SilentSeek technology reduce overall noise; the company says the drive runs at 2.7 Bell (27 decibels) in idle mode, which is well below the level of a typical whisper.

The SpinPoint F1 is available now for a suggested price of US$399.

SAMSUNG NEW WHITE LED NOTEBOOK LCD DISPLAY

Samsung announces that it has developed three new LCD displays for notebook PCs - two offering a true 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio for viewing movies, TV shows and gaming, while the third features active White-LED (light-emitting diode) backlighting that boosts picture clarity and reduces power consumption.

The Samsung 15.4-inch LCD with an active, White-LED backlight uses 40% less power than a typical LED backlight and still has a high 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

Samsung will unveil its latest LCD models, which it expects will garner considerable interest in the high-end notebook PC market, at FPD International being held in Yokohama, Japan, October 24-26.

Mass production is scheduled to commence in the first half of next year for the 16:9 displays and in the second half of 2008 for the White-LED backlit panel.

SONY HDMS-S1D HDMI DIGITAL PHOTO ALBUM

The Sony HDMS-S1D allows you to store your digital photos on an 80GB hard drive, connect to a HDTV via HDMI and display up to 50,000 high resolution photos with slide-show or Scrapbook-style displays.

The black box offers a ton of methods for importing photos, including multiple flash memory card formats, CD, DVD, USB or Ethernet. Once imported, photo collections can be managed with the supplied remote control.

Photos can be organized by date, special occasions such as birthdays and travel (using pre-selected icons), or into as many as 3,000 different photo albums?enough for every major family milestone. The digital photo album also provides the ability to review, edit, rotate, delete and arrange photos for a slideshow or digital scrapbooking with Sony�s x-Application features.

The HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album uses Sony�s face detection technology to locate faces in photographs and adjusts the slideshow transitions around the location of faces.

The Sony HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album will be available in October.

SEAGATE DEBUTS FLASH-CACHE NOTEBOOK DRIVES

Seagate has introduced its first notebook hard drives to be equipped with a large cache of NAND flash memory. The Momentus 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hard drives feature an additional cache off 256 MB of Flash memory, and will initially be available in 80, 120, and 160 GB configurations. The Momentus 5400 PSDs should begin shipping this week at prices about 25 percent higher than traditional hard drives of equivalent capacities.

The idea behind these so-called hybrid hard drives is to combine some of the performance benefits of Flash-based solid-state hard drives (fast start up and wake times, lower power consumption, reduced vulnerability to shocks and bumps) with the economics and sheer capacities available on traditional hard drives. In theory, hybrid drives should start up and resume faster than traditional hard drives, and consume less power overall than their traditional counterparts without a significantly higher price tag.

The Momentus drives rely on Microsoft Windows Vista's Superfetch and ReadyDrive technologies to manage use of the cache; unfortunately, the real-world performance of these technologies apparently leaves something to be desired, with future improvements in BIOS and Vista device drivers expected to improve performance in the future as the devices and software mature. (And without driver support, the Momentus drives function as ordinary hard drives with no significant performance benefits.) In the meantime, the Momentus drives claim to reduce Windows Vista start up time by about 20 percent, and reduce power consumption by about 40 percent.

SONY ROLLY NEW MP3 PLAYER

Sony officially announced today the Rolly MP3 player, an egg-shaped device with bands of LEDs around it and spoon-shaped dishes at its ends.

Sony describes Rolly (SEP-10BT) as a combination of robot and sound technologies. Rolly offers users a new way of interacting with consumer electronics. Rolly only has a power button and a play button. The small device created surround sound with the two integrated speakers.

Other features of Rolly include 1GB flash memory, Bluetooth, ATRAC and MP3 music file format support and USB.

Lay the Rolly on the floor and it rolls with the music, spinning, pivoting its creepy little arms, lighting up and whirring in circles. The player can move on its own or be programmed by users with a special editing program on a computer.

The measurements of Rolly are approximately 65mm in diameter, 104mm in length and the weight is approximately 300g. The Sony Rolly will be available on September 29th in Japan at a price of 40,000 Yen. (~USD352).

SONY SWEET SUGAR BATTERY

Sony demonstrated a sugar battery powering a Sony Walkman.

The Sony sugar batery generates power using glucose. Enzymes breaking up the sugar and besides electricity, water and carbohydrates are freed.

Currently a single cell offers 50mW. The size to output ratio is still not competitive with lithium ion batteries, but this is an interesting battery technology.

TOSHIBA 32GB VISTA READY BOOST FLASH MEMORY STICK

Toshiba introduces a 32GB TransMemory flash drive that complies with Vista ReadyBoost.

The Toshiba U2G-032GT is a limited edition stick that you can use to boost the performance of your Vista PC. You can also use it of course as a normal memory stick to carry data around.

The Toshiba U2G-032GT features an integrated password locking function to protect your own data. The 32GB Toshiba ReadyBoost stick measures 63x20x8mm.

Toshiba also offers smaller versions of their ReadyBoost complaint sticks. You can choose between 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB storage capacities.

JAPAN GETS SLIM SONY PSP IN 6 COLORS AND DIGITAL TV TUNER

Sony announces six colors new slimmer Sony PSP in Japan. The U.S. and Europe will only see three colors.

The six colors for the new Sony PSP in Japan are piano black, ceramic white, ice silver, rose pink, lavender purple and light blue.

Additionally Sony announces a digital TV receiver accessory for the Sony PSP. The 'Wansegu' receiver allows Japanese Sony PSP users to watch TV on the go.

The new slim Sony PSP will be available in Japan on September 20th .

iRiver Clix 8GB Redline

The iRiver Clix Redline pushes the storage capacity from 4GB to 8GB and has an updated user interface. To make an easily distinguish the new Clix from the current available Clix players, the new Clix has a signature red line wrapping around the case.

iRiver will start to ship the iRiver Clix 8GB Redline starting this week in Korea. iRiver promotes as must have accessory for the Clix Redline the Clix tango red leather case.

SONY UNVEILS REDESIGNED PLAYSTATION PORTABLE

Sony took the wraps off a redesigned PlayStation Portable (PSP) which is 33 percent lighter, 19 percent thinner, and sports a high quality video output so users can hook the unit to an external monitor or display to view photos, videos, or movies.

On the surface, the new PSP doesn't look dramatically different from its current incarnation, and in some ways the redesign fails to meet some gamers' hopes for a "PSP 2" with dramatically enhanced capabilities. Nonetheless, the new PSP will offer a 4.3-inch screen and support for UMD discs, front-facing speakers, faster load times, and improved battery life.

Sony plans to bring the new PSP to retailers in black, while, and a new silver edition beginning in September; although official pricing hasn't been announced, the units are expected to retail for $199. Sony also plans to offer a special Star Wars: Battlefront edition.

Samsung 1.8 inch 64GB in Mass Production

Samsung announced the 1.8 inch 64GB solid state drive has gone into mass production. According to the company, the move makes Samsung the largestcproducer of high-capacity SSDs in the world.

Demand for solid-state drives in mobile and portable devices is expected to increase significantly over the next few years, since flash-based drives offer greater reliability, faster startup/wake times, and lower power consumption than traditional hard drives.

Samsung expects that over the next three years, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch SSDs will move into desktop computers.

The 64GB SSD consists of 64 eight Gigabit (Gb) single-level cell flash memory chips. Use of 51nm process technology permits fabrication of much smaller components, with each chip having circuitry 1/2500th the width of a human hair.

Samsung expects that sales of SSD units will increase at a rapid 270 percent pace industry-wide between now and 2010 to become the largest growth segment in the NAND flash industry.

iRiver W10 with WiFi Location Based Service

iRiver revealed the W10 portable media player with WiFi connectivity. The iRiver W10 uses Skyhook Wireless?Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS). The W10 can offer location based services just by pinpointing your location of the access point you are using.

The iRiver W10 can be used to make VOIP phone calls and sports a 3 inch color TFT screen. Other features include miniSD card slot, FM Tuner and loudspeaker.

The details on the W10 are still sparse as iRiver is just teasing their new products and not fully announces them with specifications. The device runs with Windows CE.

MICROSOFT UNVEILED A NEW TOUCH SCREEN COMPUTER DUBBBED MICROSOFT SURFACE

Microsoft Surface is a gesture based touch panel interface that lets you 'grab' digital information with your hands, and move information between objects with natural gestures and touch, without the use of a mouse or keyboard. The UI is multi-touch aware, so it can understand gestures like zooming into a photo with two fingers.

Microsoft Surface can be used by multiple users at the same time enabling you to perform collaborative tasks. The coffee table computer also recognizes physical objects when placed on the screen.

The measurements of Surface are 22 inches high, 21 inches deep and 42 inches wide. Surface runs on Windows Vista and has wired Ethernet 10/100 and wireless 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0. Microsoft does not disclose what PC hardware is inside the Surface. With these boxy measurements the 30 inch touch screen computer is only usable as coffee table.

Microsoft says that at the end of this year, you will be able to interact with Surface in hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues. The price for the first Surface computer is between USD5,000 and USD10,000 each.
