NEC POWERMATE P5000/P5010

NEC's new PowerMate P5000/P5010 ignores the old portable-versus-stationary dichotomy, carving out a niche for what NEC calls the "hybrid PC".  The P5000/P5010 takes the compact design of a laptop, the uncompromised interface from a desktop, and rolls them into one.   Think "iMac" with a hefty extra dose of portability thrown in.

With a full 17.1-inch LCD screen and a weight of 8.8 pounds, it's tempting to lump the P5000/P5010 in with the aforementioned desktop-replacement laptops and call it day, but the P5000/P5010 packs something extra.

Unlike any laptop, its wireless RF Multimedia keyboard can break away from its screen to be positioned anywhere around it, and a full-size wireless optical mouse is included as well. If that seems to edge it a little too close to the likes of a the iMac or another one-piece PC, the PowerMate still distinguishes itself by folding up into one compact unit for transport from one place to another with a built-in handle. In design, at least, it truly does find some middle ground.

Under the hood, the PowerMates hardware has more in common with a laptop than a desktop. Its AMD Turion 64 X2 processor TL-52 running at 1.6GHz is a mobile unit through-and-through, and the on-board ATI Radeon 1200 graphics processor also pushes things in that direction. Fortunately, there are still some desktop accoutrements, such as four-channel audio (rare on a notebook) and four USB ports. Other specs include a 200GB SATA hard drive, 13-in-1 card reader, built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, 1GB (P5000) or 2GB (P5010) of DDR2 memory, slot-loading DVD Super  Multi DL +/-R DL burner and High Definition Audio.

The PowerMate wasn't designed to sit in your lap and go anywhere, so users with a need for true mobility will probably want to stick to real notebook computers. However, for situations where laptops are used avoid clutter rather than to provide mobility, the P5000/P5010 may be right at home.

NEW SONY VAIO LT HD PC/TV WITH BLU-RAY

Sony has unveiled its latest living room PC in the form of the VAIO LT PC/TV, designed as a both a computer and entertainment center for folks who might be cramped for space, but still want a high-end video experience.

The Vaio LT HD PC/TV features a "floating glass" design with a 22 inch WSXGA+ widescreen LCD display. The system will be available in multiple configurations, sporting Intel Core 2 Duo processors, a minimum of 2G of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, an unspecified "discrete" graphics controller, a "roomy" hard drive, and Windows Vista Ultimate.

The unit also sports an integrated 1.3 megapixel Webcam and echo-canceling microphone for video messaging, and a wireless keyboard and mouse designed to be used from across the room with no annoying cables. A high-definition version will offer a Blu-ray disc drive, enabling users to both play back Blu-ray content and store personal content to Blu-ray media. The Vaio LT HD PC/TV also features a VESA-compatible mount so users can hang it directly on a wall.

The Vaio LT HD PC/TV also operates as a television with an HD-capable television tuner; users can use an A/V power button to shut down television functions without shutting down computing (and video recording) functions. Sony also plans to offer a separate, external, CableCard-ready tuner.

The Vaio LT HD PC/TV should hit retailers in October, with prices starting around US$1,900; the high-definition version with a Blu-ray recorder will start at around US$2,900.

With its built-in wireless LAN technology and a wireless router (sold separately), it can be positioned virtually anywhere in the house and still access your home network on your television.

This fashionable yet practical PC positions frequently-accessed features like the DVDRW/R double layer optical drive, USB ports and multi-card reader in the front of the unit, tucked behind a curved slide-away panel, while constantly connected terminals are hidden from sight on the back.

Sony is the first to embrace Intel's Core 2 Quad processor, packing the CPU into its high-end VAIO R Master desktop system

The Vaio R Master sports Sony's oddball "split" form factor, which tries to reduce the bulk of a typical PC casing by separating the most frequently-used inputs and output into a smaller slab which can be separated from the main unit by a tether carrying USB and PCI data. The theory is that users can then pack the main CPU out of sight while maintaining a svelte on-desk form factor. The new Vaio R Master will offer an option for a Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor running at 2.4 GHz, along with a Blu-ray burner, support for up to 3 G of RAM, up to 3 TB of SATA hard disk storage, and and Nvidia Quadro FX 1500 graphics controller, all adding up to a very quick system for enjoying high-definition content or even creating some of your own, since it comes with a bunch of video editing and content-capture software, along with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. The New Vaio R Masters are set to launch in Japan with Vista Home Premium in early February.

Personal computers have become an everyday and everywhere item. As with anything else that becomes a common part of daily life, people want something that looks good in its place and feels nice to use. Sony recognizes the importance of design, and they have the talent for good looking computers. The Vaio LB Series slimtop is about bringing style to your room. Rarely would one think of the PC in the room as a design object, but the LB Series subtly makes that transition. The slimtop is mounted in a glass frame, a look we have also seen on Sony's large screen plasma and LCD televisions. The keyboard is connected and folds up when not in use. This immediately cleans up the surrounding space, and starts an attractive Vaio screensaver on the remaining portion of the display. The rest of the computer is hidden behind the 15.4" widescreen WXGA (1280 x 800) display.

A camera is mounted at the top of the LB Series, and of course there is a built-in speaker and mic. This is great for Skype videoconferencing. Other specs include an Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz) processor and 2gb RAM (max).

The LB Series  is available in four colors: silver, white, rose, and leaf. It's the perfect gift for that style-conscious spouse who keeps a messy PC in their den or bedroom. Or, of course, the perfect gift for yourself.
